Neurological Rehabilitation

Your Therapy Physiotherapy sessions are carried out by a specialist Neurological Physiotherapist in your own home. At the first consultation an assessment is completed, and your goals are discussed and created. A shared decision making approach is taken to ensure that your opinions are at the forefront of the rehabilitation process.

Your Therapy offers the additional services of Vestibular rehabilitation and Functional Electrical Stimulation, as well as Acupuncture and Reiki to address your mental and emotional wellbeing. Your Therapy can also advise whether there is a need to seek further assessments such as Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy or Psychological input and coordinate this on your behalf.

  • Individualised exercise programmes can include:

  • Balance education
  • Stretching programmes

Traditional acupuncture is based on the belief that energy flows through the body in channels called meridians. This energy is known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). When Qi doesn’t flow freely through the body, this is thought to cause illness. It is also believed that acupuncture can restore the flow of Qi, and assist in the restoration of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Acupuncture can be used alongside other Physiotherapy treatments.

FES produces a controlled electrical stimulation to provide movement in a limb by producing contractions in weak or paralysed muscles. This replicates normal nerve and muscle action, and the use of FES may improve the strength in weak muscles, reduce spasticity and reduce pain. FES can be used to help function in the upper or lower limb and is commonly used to treat dropped foot following neurological damage to the brain or spinal cord.

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a form of treatment to encourage the central nervous system to compensate for problems in the inner ear; including advice, positional treatments and exercise. The most common form of dizziness and balance disorder is BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo), a disorder of the inner ear resulting in episodes of intense dizziness on certain head movements. Other causes include side effects from medication or alcohol, brain disorders such as stroke, concussion or cerebellar degeneration, cardiac problems and anxiety.

Reiki translated means universal life energy and is a transferral and movement of energy. This energy is known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). When Qi doesn’t flow freely through the body, this is thought to cause illness. It is also believed that Reiki can restore Qi, and assist in the restoration of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Reiki is a non-intrusive, relaxing treatment where the patient remains clothed. The therapist gently places their hands in a series of positions on or near the body. There is no massage or manipulation involved. During the session the whole person is treated rather than specific area, and can be used alongside other physiotherapy treatments.
